Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park is the jewel of Tasmania’s east coast.

Around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from both Hobart and Launceston, Freycinet National Park occupies most of the beautiful Freycinet Peninsula, known for its granite peaks and spectacular beaches. Wineglass Bay, frequently named as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, is a favourite with day-trippers, walkers and climbers. Diving and snorkelling are also popular.The seaside village of Swansea and the hamlet of Coles Bay (the entry point into the National Park) are summer hotspots. Visitors gravitate towards the beaches with crystal-clear water and lookouts like the Cape Tourville Lighthouse.

The region is also home to several outstanding luxury resorts, and some of Tasmania’s finest boutique wine producers.

Saffire Freycinet

Located at Coles Bay, Saffire Freycinet is one of Australia’s best luxury lodges. The dramatic waterfront resort was designed to stand alongside the likes of qualia, and features 20 accommodation suites, each with sweeping views out across Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards Mountains (and have complete privacy from neighbouring suites). Tasmania’s freshest produce, wines and beers are showcased in Palate restaurant and the lounge bar. There are spa facilities, an onsite gym and a range of exclusive signature experiences (such as a visit to Freycinet Marine Farm) included in the tariffs.

Freycinet Lodge

This establishment offers excellent food and wine experiences in beautiful surrounds at comparatively modest prices. A recent renewal project has seen the opening of its nine new upmarket Coastal Pavilions and six Mountain Terrace rooms. Some sit overlooking the waters of Great Oyster Bay, while others nestle gently within the bush with filtered coastal views.

Edge of the Bay Resort

The works of local artists were commissioned specially for this project. Inspired by the beautiful peninsula, the artworks are featured throughout its bedrooms and lounges.

 

Best Restaurants in Freycinet

Freycinet Marine Farm

This place has a farm gate sales outlet. Visitors can buy oysters, mussels, scallops and rock lobster to enjoy on the deck or take away.

The Edge Café, Bar & Restaurant

Nestled in at the Edge of the Bay Resort, this waterfront dining focusses on local produce.

Palate

The high-end restaurant at Saffire Freycinet serves up multi-course degustation dinners or an à la carte option. It is officially reserved for in-house guests only, but it might be worth a quick call to check if they are fully booked or not.

The Bay Restaurant

Open to guests of Freycinet Lodge as well as visitors, the restaurants with great views specialises in seasonal and regional cuisine.

Fire & Ice Café

This new eatery in the heart of Swansea, overlooks Great Oyster Bay. It is open for breakfast and lunch.

Kate’s Berry Farm

This place, of course, sells local berries, but they also sell jam, ice cream and other local produce.

Just Desserts Café

The handcrafted chocolates, confectionery and desserts available from Just Desserts Café will help to satisfy any sweet tooth cravings.

Best bars & cafés in Beechworth

The Farm Shed East Coast Wine Centre

This popular wine centre in Bicheno always have at least five local wines available for tastings or by the glass, and sells more than 50 wines from 20 different producers, large and small. Larsen & Thompson teas are also on offer, along with Zimmah coffee and rustic food options. There’s even an onsite post office for sending gifts back home.

Géographe Restaurant and Espresso Bar

This a seven-day-a-week espresso bar at Coles Bay serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The baristas brew great coffee as well as serve top Tasmanian wines, beers and ciders.

Devil’s Corner Winery

The cellar door at Devil’s Corner has two eateries and superb views from its lookout tower.

Freycinet Vineyard

While this winery produces a range of boutique offerings, including superb rieslings and pinots, you can also sample Freycinet Extra Virgin Olive Oil, made from olives grown on the adjoining grove.

Craigie Knowe Vineyard

At Cranbrook, this oldest vineyard in the region serves platters and cheeseboards. The experience is increased here with handcrafted chocolates and wine pairings.

Milton Vineyard

This family-owned once-19th-century wool farm serves fabulous lunches over summer overlooking a lake.

Spring Vale Vineyard & Cellar Door

The heritage cellar door at Spring Vale Wines is housed in a convict-built stable dating back to 1842.

Spring Bay Distillery

Lovers of artisan spirits will enjoy this place, which uses premium Tasmanian barley to make the perfect single malt whisky. Tours can be arranged for one to 20 people at a time (appointments are preferred).
