History and heritage

Australia’s first inland city, Goulburn, is home to a wealth of museums, charming homesteads and exquisite heritage architecture.

Set on the banks of the Wollondilly River, the Goulburn Historic Waterworks offer a look back at historical engineering, showcasing how the city was once supplied with water. This rare facility is the only one of its kind, and remains in its original location.

The Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre highlights the significance of the railway and the impact that it had on the city. Offering an informative and engaging tour, you can explore historic locomotives, carriages, and memorabilia in an authentic roundhouse setting.

To learn more about Goulburn’s expertly preserved past, embark on a self-guided heritage tour. Featuring over 40 impressive sites, the tour will take you past the historic Court House, Post Office and Town Hall. You can also visit Riversdale Homestead, a heritage-listed inn from the 1830s which houses sketches and carvings from the 19th century, and a collection of colonial furniture.

Plus, if you’re visiting in autumn, you can enjoy vibrant leaves that contrast the historic buildings, and a cool climate perfect for days of exploring.

Outdoor attractions

As well as boasting a wide range of historic attractions, Goulburn is also an ideal place to enjoy the great outdoors.

Adventurous spirits should make the short drive to Bungonia National Park, known as a thrill-seekers dream with opportunities for caving, canyoning, rock climbing, abseiling and hiking. Families will love the sweeping views of Bungonia Gorge, which can be accessed from several popular lookouts. If hiking is more your thing, head out on the Badgerys Spur walking track. This steep hike descends through a eucalyptus forest before ending at the Shoalhaven River, where you can celebrate with a picnic, or a dip in the cool water.

The famous Big Merino is another must-see while in the region.
