Sydney Airport unveils major apron upgrade

Sydney Airport has reached a milestone with planned renovations to increase the travel experience.

Sydney Airport has completed its $169 million expansion project, intended to increase international overlay capacity and promote long-term growth.

The project, which targeted the southeast sector of the Sydney International Airport, will offer four new Code F layover bays capable of accommodating large aircraft such as A380s. Two existing Code E bays have also been upgraded to support bigger aircraft including the Boeing 777, Airbus A340 and Airbus A350, with a flexible layout to accommodate up to six Code E and four Code F aircraft.

The improvements also include three new taxiways and taxilanes to improve the flow of aircraft and reduce congestion leading to longer wait times and flight delays. Ground power, pre-conditioned air and a future-ready hydrant refuelling system will contribute to safety, sustainability, and comfort.

According to Sydney Airport group executive planning and delivery, Paul Willis, “this project is a key part of our long-term strategy to grow and future-proof Sydney Airport.”

“By expanding our international layover capacity, we’re unlocking greater efficiency across the airfield, freeing up gates during peak periods and improving aircraft flow and turnaround times. That means smoother operations for our airline partners and a better experience for passengers.

“While COVID temporarily paused construction, completing this project reinforces our commitment to delivering the major infrastructure needed to support Sydney Airport’s role as Australia’s international gateway for decades to come.”

Development of the southeast sector comes as part of a larger renovation plan designed to improve the travel experience as a whole. For the international airport, this means new security screening technology and automated bag processing, while the domestic airport is currently overhauling check-in with a $200 million investment in security and technology. T3 Domestic will also receive a new dining precinct and shopfronts.
