7 great experiences in Darling Harbour

Check out the best tours in Darling Harbour, where history and adventure blend seamlessly.

Tours in Darling Harbour are a great way to immerse yourself in the history, heritage and beauty of this incredible waterside precinct.

For more than 7,000 years, Darling Harbour served as a boundary between the Wangal and Gadigal clans of the Eora Nation. Known as ‘Tumbalong’ meaning ‘a place where seafood is found’, it was common to find the remnants of oyster shells and other shellfish on the shore, as both clans used the area for fishing and transport.

In the 1820s, the construction of Market Street Wharf signified the beginning of a new era of trade and industry. Shipyards and wharves popped up along the water, and the harbour experienced a number of firsts including use of the first steam engine in Australia in 1815 and the assembly of the first iron-hulled ship.

Today, Darling Harbour is Sydney’s waterside playground, with so many popular places to eat, drink, shop and explore. The family-friendly spot boasts museums, wildlife experiences and outdoor adventures to suit visitors of every age. With so much to see and do, we recommend starting your time in Darling Harbour by simply walking around. It’s the best way to immerse yourself in all that the precinct has to offer.

Then, it’s time to pick up the pace with these land and water tours in Darling Harbour that take your experience to the next level.

Submarines and living sea history

Located right on the water, the Australian National Maritime Museum is an indoor and outdoor historical landmark home to one of the biggest in-water fleets in the world. Start by wandering through the six permanent galleries, and the evolving program of temporary exhibitions, including Shaped by the Sea. This permanent display shows how Aboriginal cultural practices have deepened our understanding of the seas, with a range of installations including a dugong skeleton, canoes and interactive digital elements.

Then, head outside to jump aboard one of the museum’s many vessels, including Australia’s largest museum vessel and the last big gun ship, the HMAS Vampire, which is equipped with anti-aircraft guns, anti-ship torpedo launchers and several twin turrets. Then descended into the Cold War era HMAS Onslow, a submarine which completed 16 missions. Today, you can explore the diving chamber where Special Forces left the boat for covert operations, and the soundproofing equipment that makes the Onslow one of the quietest submarines ever built.
