Pawsome guide to 6 dog beaches in Adelaide

No matter your dogs breed or personality, Adelaide has the perfect place for you and your furry friend to run wild.

Adelaide has 70 kilometres of coastline – some of it peaceful and protected, and other parts wild and windy.

When it comes to dog beaches in Adelaide, you’ll find everything from wide, powdery soft stretches of sand, rock pools to splash about in, and grassy parks perfect for endless zoomies. Your dog will have the time of its life at these dog beaches in Adelaide, while you get some of those steps in!

From October to April, most standard dog beaches in Adelaide operate on a timeshare system, meaning that dogs must stay on leashes between 10am and 8pm, but outside of these hours, you and your furry friends can run around to your heart’s content.

Unlimited freedom and non-stop fun

O’Sullivan Beach is paradise for social pups that love a big run with other dogs. Stretching for over a kilometre from Selway Terrace to Heather Street, this beach offers sandy shores and rugged cliffs perfect for those pups that are thrill-seekers and enjoy endless fun. Enjoy clean, clear waters – ideal for dogs that love to splash about with the waves.

If your pup is on the smaller side, West Beach is a good area to explore, and will help them gain all the confidence they need to later enjoy the bigger waves. This area provides 24/7 off-leash access and there’s plenty of parking for those driving.

Along West Beach you’ll find Coast Path Park – a 70-kilometre continuous walking and cycling path spanning the metropolitan Adelaide coastline from North Haven in the north to Sellicks Beach in the south. This path connects you to all dog beaches in Adelaide so you and your mate can check out all of the different views and terrains. So much fun!

Enjoy lunch with your pup at Fuego by the Sea, which is right on West Beach and very dog-friendly. The menu is inspired by Argentinian, Spanish and Italian cuisine. Your pup will swoon over your charcoal-grilled scotch fillet steak. Sit on the deck and watch everyone and their doggos stroll by.

Calm waters, bottomless brunch and chargrilled steaks

If you’re after a relaxing morning walk along the coast followed by brunch, Brighton Beach should go on your bucket list of best dog beaches in Adelaide.

After a lovely walk, pop into The Seller Door, where they do a bottomless brunch every Saturday and Sunday for $49 per person. This includes a main breakfast or a lunch dish, plus a side dish and bottomless fruit tingle mimosa jugs!

Looking for flat sand in an area big enough for your pup to run around and explore? Henley Beach South is a place you should add to your list of dog beaches in Adelaide. This place is perfect for senior dogs or smaller breeds who enjoy an easy and unbothered walk along the beach. If either you or your dog are not looking to get your feet/paws sandy there is also an amazing trail that meets the ocean known as Torrens Linear Park Trail.

After a scenic walk, head over to iconic Joe’s Henley Beach – a lively coffee shop and wine bar that looks like a lovely beach shack from the 1970s, with sweeping views of the shoreline. Lap up the views with your pup from the outdoor deck and enjoy a coffee, a craft beer or a local wine.

Open seven days a week from 7am to 3pm, Joe’s is famous for its breakfast menu made from locally sourced produce, and fresh pastries. Try an acai bowl, a smoked salmon bagel or a mushroom omelette. Delish.

You can’t beat relaxation, exercise and walks with your best friend along a beach.

At Seacliff Beach (near the popular suburb of Glenelg), you and your furry friend will find a much quieter and less crowded area. This area is known for its flat, expansive shoreline and relatively calm, low-hazard waters. It’s a great spot for swimming, fishing, or taking a stroll along the Esplanade.

If you fancy a bite to eat after a walk, head to to the dog-friendly Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club (Seacliff SLSC), which has a great modern Australian menu at its eatery called Surfy. All the classics are on the menu, from fish and chips and chicken schnitzels, to burgers, salads and nachos. Enjoy a cold drink on the deck and take in the ocean views.

Hallett Cove Beach: Rocky trails and panoramic views

If your pup has an adventurous spirit, add Hallett Cove Beach to your list of best dog beaches in Adelaide, although to be exact, it’s a 30-minute drive from Adelaide.

The beach is rocky, and it’s renowned for its commanding 280-million-year-old geological formations such as The Sugarloaf, which is an other-worldly formation in the Hallett Cove Conservation Park. It’s a striking natural monument composed of a red boulder and sediment base topped with white sand, and it got its name as it looks like an old-fashioned, cone-shaped mass of refined sugar.

The northern clifftops at Hallett Cove feature globally significant glacial pavements that are the best record of Permian glaciation in all of Australia. The area also has significant cultural ties to the Kaurna people, and it’s home to more than 1,700 ancient artefacts.

The area is also home to a nine-kilometre clifftop boardwalk that spans Marino to Hallett Cove, with great ocean views and a suspension bridge across two gullies.
