An exceptionally atypical stay at Quincy Melbourne

Quincy Hotel Melbourne lobby

Rising above the city skyline from its enviable position in Flinders Lane, Quincy Hotel Melbourne is a playground for pleasure seekers with an appreciate for unabashedly bold design and unexpected dining experiences.

A few days before I was due to fly to Melbourne, I received a call from a Victorian number I didn’t recognise. I answered, slinging my laptop bag over my shoulder as I got out of the car and was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t the ATO, a telemarketer or a Nigerian Prince trying to solicit money from me. It was Amber, one of the Q-rators at Quincy Hotel Melbourne; the swanky new boutique hotel that I was due to stay at over the weekend. She asked if I had a pillow preference, which types of beverages I might want stock din the mini bar, and if I had any particular plans for my weekend in Melbourne that she might Abe able to assist with. As someone who still gets a kick out of perusing the “pillow menu” at top-tier hotels, you can imagine how giddy I was to receive this call.

As soon as I hung up, I knew this wasn’t going to be just any old hotel stay.

Quincy Melbourne represents a new tier of accommodation that marries clever and quirky design with exceptional, personalised service and dining experiences that make you forget all the other Melbourne restaurants you had on your hit list. Being Australia’s first taste of the brand that has made such a distinct mark on the high-flying city of Singapore, travellers can expect the colour, character and vibrancy of Southeast Asia paired with the über cool atmosphere of Melbourne’s laneways and funky eateries.

The 29-storey boutique hotel pokes its head well out above the city skyline. Stunning views abound whichever room you happen to be staying in. The rooftop bar, The Q, has an entire row of outward facing bench seats just so quests can soak up their surroundings while sipping on a signature Quincy Sling – a Melbourne take on the Singaporian favourite. On the same level and with an equally impressive outlook, the heated undercover pool offers the perfect spot to wind down of an afternoon, even with Melbourne’s notoriously changeable weather.

When breakfast rolls around, Quincy’s Salted Egg restaurant is in a whole other league. Melbourne might be known around the world for its instagram-worthy, avocado-based brunches but the Southeast Asian influence on this menu encourages guests to take a leap of faith and try something new. Pandan waffles, chilli crab scrambled eggs and soft silken tofu are among the favourites. And for passers by or guests who are grabbing something on the go, the SingSong eatery in the lobby won’t disappoint.

Of all the delightfully unexpected culinary treats at Quincy Melbourne, one you simply can’t miss is the tiffin dining experience. Arriving late after our evening flight, we were craving a quick and easy bite to eat. Granted, we wouldn’t have had to go far to find something tasty but we had reached peak laziness and opted for room service. Robes on, feet up, we sipped our signature ready-to-pour gin cocktails from the mini bar as a meal of epic proportions was laid out for us. From the top down, each layer revealed a new mingling of fragrant herbs and spices, and the hand-rolled roti was perfect for soaking up the last of the punchy sauces in each dish. Full to the brim and high on food-induced endorphins, it’s a good thing we didn’t have far to fall into bed.

Beyond the superb food, horizon-stretching views and location in the thick of the action, it’s the ‘anticipatory hospitality’ that truly sets Quincy apart. The team of Q-rators go way beyond the usual hotel concierge service. They know the city back to front and can tell you, on a dime, where to find the best whisky sour, which restaurants have great vegan options and which boutiques to check out based on your style. Even if the 241-room hotel is packed to the rafters, the bespoke service makes you feel like you’re the most important person there.
